Movie Quiz Monday

Back in 2010 when I first joined Twitter, I engaged with the few followers and friends that I had using a quiz that I would upload every Monday, appropriately tagged #MovieQuizMonday.
The idea was based around my love for VHS covers and their fonts, but this had to be quickly adapted to suit the movie posters too, on account of me not having a suitable scanner to process the images from my collection. It still worked.

The quiz lasted a few years and I found it a very handy tool in reaching out to like-minded souls and movie lovers everywhere.

See if you can find the movies from the letters below, letters that have been taken from the VHS covers and movie posters. It’s not as easy as you think.

Midnight (1982)

This is the original artwork by famed artist Gray Morrow (1934-2001) for the American one sheet of Midnight, the 1982 horror movie.
This is signed on the reverse by the artist, and pictures of the letter of sale authenticating the artwork signed by Sam Sherman, President of Independent International which also states that the artwork had been in the vaults since its creation, until its sale in 2007.

No Safe Haven: Dream Girl

A few months back I caught the Wings Hauser vehicle, No Safe Haven (’87). The film was pretty fun but what I remember most about it was the track playing as the end credits rolled.
I listened, loved and waited patiently for the information about the track to pop up, and it did – Dream Girl by Isaac Hayes. The thing is, it’s not available anywhere online and no sign of it on YouTube either. Was it honestly made solely for this fairly obscure movie? Seems odd.
I decided to record the track direct from the VHS as I could wait no longer.

I just felt like sharing this little piece of magic with you. Soak up those sweet lyrics.

Mystery Box of VHS

At the beginning of December I was alerted to a very interesting auction on ebay. This particular auction was for a box of random VHS tapes, or as the seller so colourfully described as “LUCKY DIP A BOX OF MYSTERY VHS VIDEO TAPES, WHATS INSIDE THE BOX???”.
When two words like ‘mystery’ and ‘tapes’ are thrown together into a listing that only comprises of capital letters, well, you can imagine how fast my heart was beating.

The little VHS fairy appeared on my right shoulder telling me that the box would be filled with nothing more than Jane Fonda workout tapes, and on the left shoulder the devil himself appeared and planted the seed in my brain that maybe this seller knew nothing about rare tapes. And maybe, just maybe the box had the potential to be a Video Nasties dream haul. My mind was made. I placed my bid.

I purchased the tapes two weeks before Christmas and asked my wife if she would wrap each tape individually, that way I would have 25 mysteries as opposed to just one, and she reluctantly agreed.

Loophole (1981)

This is an original piece of art for the Albert Finney film ‘Loophole’ (’81).
It is approximately half quad size and produced on board. I do not know whether it was produced for a cinema poster or for video, nor do I know who the artist was.

Visually, the piece is quite appealing, however it has 2 major fold marks, which run down the centre horizontally and vertically and a piece of acetate overlay which is stuck to the artwork.

Even so, it is a one of a kind piece and would look beautiful displayed.
